How we calculate this
We pull daily shortwave radiation forecasts from Open-Meteo for
Belfast and apply the standard PV yield model:
energy = radiation × system kWp × performance ratio.
Performance ratio is set to 0.78 (accounts for inverter losses, panel temperature, orientation and soiling). Savings are valued at 33.5p per kWh, the Power NI standard credit tariff.

How much do solar panels cost in Northern Ireland?
Typical costs range from £5,000 for a 3kW system to £12,000 for a 6kW+ system. The average 4kW system costs around £6,000 to £8,000 installed. All domestic installations benefit from 0% VAT.
Are there grants for solar panels in NI?
Not for most households. The only exception is NISEP's income-limited Toasty Homes scheme, which fully funds heating, insulation and, where suitable, solar panels for owner-occupiers on under £28,000 (single) or £35,000 (couple) with old or missing heating, and may already be fully allocated. The Warm Homes Plan you may have read about is a Great Britain scheme that does not apply here. NI's Affordable Warmth Scheme covers insulation and heating rather than solar PV. What every NI household does get is 0% VAT on domestic solar until March 2027, worth roughly £1,200 to £1,600 on a typical system, plus export payments of around 4-6p per kWh from NI suppliers.
Do solar panels work in Northern Ireland's weather?
Yes. Northern Ireland receives around 950 to 1,000 kWh per kW of solar capacity annually. Modern panels work effectively in cloudy conditions and actually perform better in cooler temperatures.
How long do solar panels take to pay back?
Most NI homeowners see payback in 8 to 12 years, depending on system size and usage. Solar panels last 25+ years, meaning you benefit from 15+ years of essentially free electricity after payback.
